Cologne Old Town And Its Countless Restaurants
You surely already have seen it many times — the world-wide well-known picture of the Cologne old town?
Framed of the two bridges Deutzer Brücke and Hohenzollernbrücke, are positioned multicolored houses, pushed at the Rhine bank, crowned from the gothical cathedral and the Roman church Saint Martin, making you want to sit down and realx, enjoying the beautiful, memorable view over the Rhine river and shipping boats passing by.
Innumerable restaurants, bars and snack bars invite you to stay in the cramped lanes. Historically seen laid here, at old town, the old Roman port, which had been put on in the original Rhine arm. This Rhine arm silt up, and starting from 950 A.D. arose with St. Martin the new center of this quarter created by archbishop Bruno.
Below St. Martin stood the pile house. A tin-decorated building, which served as camp for the goods, which kept the citizen due to the "pile right" temporarily in the city.
On the other side of St. Martin arose the Alter Markt (Old Market), a civil market of the Middle Ages, influenced of the richly decorated city hall tower. This Alter Markt is being used for several "city events."
For example, during the Christmas Time you're going to find three Christmas Markets throughout downtown. One of them, a very large one, is located right on Alter Markt.
