Hessen — Where Money Plays A Leading Role

Hessen is the fifth largest state in Germany. It has an area of more than 21,000 sq-km and a population of over six million.

The capital of Hessen is Wiesbaden whereby the largest urban area is Frankfurt am Main. Hessen consists of 21 counties and 5 independent cities.

This state is located in western-central Germany. Its major cities are Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Offenbach, Hanau, Gießen, Wetzlar, Limburg, Fulda, Kassel and Marburg. The major rivers in Hessen are Fulda and Lahn while the principal mountain ranges are Rhön, the Westerwald, the Taunus and the Spessart.

Hessen is a typical holiday place providing activities such as sailboarding, windsurfing, sailing, hang-gliding, skiing and horse-riding. Edersee is famous for sailboarding, windsurfing and sailing while Wasserkuppe in the Rhön is a glider's paradise.

There are several golf, cycling and tennis facilities. You'll LOVE to take a boat ride on the rivers Main and Rhine or go canoeing on the Lahn river.

Wiesbaden, capital of Hessen, is famous for its international spa. The most striking building in Wiesbaden is Kurhaus, located in the city center. It is a leisure time center and also has a nice garden to relax. Spa enthusiasts need to spend one day at the Kaiser Friedrich Therme in the city center.

Frankfurt am Main is the largest commercial hub of Hessen but also has interesting museums for travelers. The cathedrals in the towns of Miltenberg and Worms attract a lot of visitors.

In Grosser Feldberg, the highest mountain peak is Taunus. At the top of the Taunus is a 40 meter tall observatory and a telecom tower.

The residents of Hessen speak a very strong German dialect but they also have a basic knowledge of English. So, you should have plenty of opportunities communicating with natives. And young Germans are happy to help.

Local specialties of Hessen include wine from white grapes or apples. This apple wine (Apfelwein) comes in two versions — sweet and sour.

Most international tourists coming to Hessen arrive at Frankfurt international airport. Frankfurt's central station is a 15 minutes drive from the airport. Hahn, a former military airfield, is being used by low budget air carriers for Euopean wide flights only.

Hessen boasts of has one of the best transport infrastructures in Europe. Several trans-European and German national freeways cross here. The state also has high-speed train systems and major trans-European waterways.

Special Tip!As in entire Germany, here too are large networks of public transport which often have special offers for state wide travels. So take advantage of this!

Once you've experienced and explored this part of Germany, tell me your Hessen story. I wanna know! smile
