Stuttgart New Castle was built by Duke Carl Eugen of Wuerttemberg from 1744 to1793. He wanted to build Stuttgart to be a second Versailles.

On September 3rd, 1746, the foundation-stone was put. Building master was Leopoldo Matteo Retti, a nephew of Donato Giovanni Frisoni, the designer of Ludwigsburg castle. Retti established between 1746 and 1751 the main's building, the so-called Corps de Logis, and the garden wing.

Hereby he oriented himself to the contemporary architecture of France. The 3-wing plant was a typical representative of its time: Only decoration at the simple façade are the sculptures on the balustrades. After Rettis death, Philippe de la Guêpière continued the building.

After a fire in November 1762, duke Carl Eugen ordered the rapid development of white hall and mirror gallery in the city wing, in order to receive the appropriate frameworks for its birthday ceremonies one year later. Then however the work on the new castle was stopped for one decade, because Carl Eugen shifted the residence to Ludwigsburg in 1764, and returned to Stuttgart only in 1775.

After duke Friedrich II. had become king of Wuerttemberg in 1806, he let transform the areas in the new castle by Nikolaus Friedrich of Thouret, in the style of the Empire. Till around the center of the last century, the wuerttembergic kings resided in the new castle.

In the year 1944 the reconstruction followed the destruction of the lock from 1958 to 1964. Today, the new castle accommodates Ministries of Baden-Wuerttemberg and representational rooms.

By the way, on April 15th, 1920, Richard from Weizsaecker was born in a roof dwelling of the Stuttgart New Castle. He was our Federal President of Germany from 1984 to 1994.
